I'm thinking of something big.
I'm thinking of doing something crazy.

I'm thinking of going out and living a little. Nothing drastic. Just a little.

Have you figured out what it is yet? Well, obviously I would like to take a trip. Just a small trip. To New York City. I have been thinking of how I would like to celebrate my big 3-0 this year. I would like to celebrate it in the Big Apple. And I would like you all to go with me. Yes, you Yolanda. And you, Christy. You too, Sass. Are you in Sharon and Kathy? What about you, Amelia? You don't have to go just for my birthday. You can go just because you've never been or because you want to get away and have some fun with someone you love. You could even plan to meet someone at the top of the Empire State Building. That someone could be someone you heard on the radio and fell in love with. Wait. Sorry, that was a movie I saw. But you get my point. Just go because you want to see it. Live. Take a chance. Do something drastic. I'm going. Be there. New York City, October 6th, 2008.
Now, all of this is contingent on two things.
My husband has to agree to it.
And I have to win the lottery.

I think Josh would agree if you won the lottery.
Christy
I have always wanted to go to New York City!!!! So if you win the lottery (that I'm sure you never play) couldn't you just buy my ticket there too??
Me and Chris went 6 months after the twin towers was hit and it was great. Very cold and windy. My favorite was ice skating in the park. I will never forget it and would love to take the kids one day.
Thanks for the pictures of Laura with the kids. Jonathon looks really young in that picture.
What a great idea. Wouldn't that be a thing.
Of course you've got to think of these things if they are ever going to stand a chance of happening. Recaro and I keep talking about getting to America and to New York.... eeek!
It would be so exciting!!
Well she didn't really invite me but I have been thinking about it for over a year now. I want to see a play in a big theatre. I want to see Macy's, I want to see everything.
Flying there might not be as costly as you think.
Call me back when you win the lottery.
I am pretty sure you could convince Josh, but the jury is out on whether or not you will win the lottery.
I live about 5 hours from NYC, so I will meet you there. My family has lived here for 11 years and I'm the only one who has still never been there.
I have found that the best site for finding cheap flights is kayak.com. Everyone reading this comment- go to kayak.com and book your flight to NYC for Oct. 6th! I will make my dad drive me in mom's van and I will pick everyone up from the airport! Then we will not have to take a cab. We will get tickets to see Phantom of the Opera (yes there are other shows, but the phantom never disappoints). We will see all of the sights and eat at the best hot dog stands in town!
Hey, try these numbers:03, 04, 30, 11, 26. If you win you can buy my ticket! You know how bad I need a vacation :))
First of all, I can't believe you are going to be 30 - you seemed so much younger than me when I was a missionary... a little arrogant of me! Lottery or not, you need to do something big and spectacular for the big thirty!!! Go to NYC... it's magnificent, exciting and somewhere you definitely need to see.
What about me? Remember when we were born just hours apart?
What a great idea...Ben and I spent our honeymoon there alost five years ago...we had a lot of fun...I think everyone should visit at least once...I live close enough to buy a reasonable plane ticket...if you get the go ahead from the hubby, then you can count me in!
i LOVE that movie! NY is awesome. i so need to go back there one day. fingers crossed and go buy a lottery ticket!!!
I loved NYC. We went for Christmas once and it was just like being in a movie. Would love to go back.
Big tip for the lottery, you can't increase your chances of winning, but you can increase your chances of winning a bigger prize, pick a few numbers over 30 (most people pick birthdays, so if you win, you won't have to share it with so many people!)
Recaro's up for it and we've checked the visa situation....
NYC is the best.place.ever. I would SO go again and again...I am obsessed with the place. Here's my recount about the first time I went!!

Okay you little whippersnapper! Oh to be 30 again!!! I know I am not invited - lurkers probably aren't! :-; Anyway, I celebrated my thirtieth birthday in NYC and I highly suggest it! My sister lived in Manhattan at the time - right across from the ABC studios in a high rise apt on the 40+ floor. I have been there many times but this trip was different for me. All of my sisters met me there for the weekend and I had a to do list. My list wasn't the usual stuff, it was things I don't get to do anywhere else. I bought a fake handbag on the street - it was very seedy - we hid in the breezeway by the subway to make the transaction. I ordered chinese food delivery and ate it while looking over the city from her apartment. I ate a hot dog from a street vender at Rockefeller plaza. I rode a boat around Manhattan and heard about the history of the buildings. I got my picture sketched by a street artist. We walked through Central Park at night - all the while looking for the body that was surely hidden somewhere. We were going to eat breakfast at the top of the World Trade Center but none of us wanted to get up that early. Little did we know that 8 days later they would be gone. Looking back, the best part was the time walking from place to place with my sisters and being silly all the while. I do love the city but I love what it gives when I go - I am guaranteed to have time with my sister, Karol, who now lives in Connecticut (a 45 min train ride). Heath and I are taking the kids for Thanksgiving this year - yes, we are going for the parade, too. We did this when Hope was really little but she doesn't remember. When I went last year it was just a trip with my sisters again to get together for my mom's birthday. For me, NYC means quality family time - it is the best place for me!! Go! Even if you don't win the lottery!
Win the lottery... stranger things have happened. Goodluck! I hope it works out for you.
Hey Amanda -
As requested, here are my must-do's in NYC (brace yourself, this is going to be lengthy):
- Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and go for pizza at Grimaldi's in Brooklyn. It’s the best. I’m drooling just thinking about it.
- See a broadway show. I've only seen a few, but loved them all. My most recent favorite is "Curtains" - David Hyde Pierce is fantastic. You can get cheaper same-day tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square.
- Skip the street vendor hotdogs and proceed directly to Gray’s Papaya for the best dog you’ll ever eat. You will see imitations throughout the city (Papaya Dog, Papaya King…), but I am partial to the upper west side location at 72nd and Amsterdam.
- Pick a few of the big tourist attractions, but don’t try to fit all of them in. Some, like going to the Statue of Liberty or to the top of the Empire State Building, can take all day. So see the ones that are important to you, and skip the ones that aren’t – you’ll get to do a lot more. A great way to see Lady Lib is to take the Staten Island ferry across to SI and back. It’s free! I like to go at dusk, so you get the daylight view of the city/statue on the way out and a gorgeous lit-up nighttime view on the way back.
- Check out some of the amazing museums. If you are on a budget, keep an eye out for museums with a “suggested” entrance fee (like the MET or the Natural History Museum). You don’t have to pay the full $15-$20 to get in, especially if you can only stay for an hour or so. Another tip – the MET and their sister museum, the Cloisters have dual admittance. If you go to one, you can get into the other for free on the same day.
- Take some time to just wander the different neighborhoods. Walking is the best way to see the city. It is also the best way to work off all the goodies you will come across. Here are my very favorite NY treats:
The Doughnut Plant tres leche doughnut (Grand St. bet. Essex & Norfolk – lower east side)
Levain Bakery chocolate peanut butter cookie (74th & Amsterdam)
Beard Papa cream puffs (locations throughout the city)
Emack & Bolio’s ice cream (79th & Amsterdam)
Cupcakes – from almost anywhere! My favorites are Crumbs, Magnolia Bakery and Buttercup Bakeshop
- After your feet are aching from a long day of walking, and your stomach is full of baked goods, treat yourself to a mani/pedi (it is your birthday trip, after all). There’s a salon on practically every corner.
- Go to Burger Joint. It is a hidden NY gem. You’ll find it behind a curtain inside the lobby of the swank Le Parker Meridien Hotel on 57th bet. 6th & 7th aves. Just follow your nose and the little neon sign to one of the best burgers in the city (avoid the lunchtime rush if you can).
I hope you have an amazing trip! I’ll try to get Meg to chime in with her suggestions.
