Down in the Dumps

Let's get right to the point. I haven't felt like posting anything. I'm usually a pretty upbeat, positive gal, but I'm having a hard time finding the bright side. I mean life is good. Josh is staying busy at work and I am not complaining because in times like these it's great to still have work coming in. All of my kids are healthy and very happy. That alone could keep me happy the rest of my days.

I'm just worried. I'm worried that we have lived in excess for too long and the bill is about to come due. I'm worried that people (including myself sometimes) have lived above our means and we will have to be knocked on our perverbial bums before we begin to live with what we need as opposed to what we want or even what someone else has. I'm worried that there isn't a man (or woman) alive that can pull us out of the hole we have willingly thrown ourselves into.

This lady seems like a nice person and she seems to have the right attitude as far as cutting spending goes, I just think she is extremely underqualified to become our Nation's Vice President. I'm all for women in government, I just can't believe that there wasn't a more qualified, granted less pretty (Sorry. Is that sexist and can I be sexist since I am a woman?) woman for the job.

I liked this guy when he ran against Bush. I liked him because I thought he would really be different. I don't know if I've grown up or what but I don't like his ideas anymore. What really turned me off to him was when he was asked in one of the debates about our economy and he said, "I will have a staff that knows about the economy and they will help me make the choices for our economy." WHAT??? I felt like I was the only person on Earth who believed that maybe, just maybe, considering the times we are living in, our Commander in Chief should know a little something about the economy.

And then there's this guy. Who I honestly believe has the best of intentions but will not really be able to change anything. I think he simply will not be able to change the face of Government as we know it and that seems to me to be about the extent of the work we need to do.

I didn't get a picture of Joe Biden who is that previous guys running mate, but I do want to add something about him. I really like him a lot. What I like about him is that he has gone home to his family from the first day he was in Washington. I like that he says what he thinks, whether it be politically correct or not. But are those good reasons to vote for the guy??

We need Mitt. Fine, whatever. I just don't know what I'm going to do.

I asked Josh's grandma if she could take care of our whole family when the economy goes down the toilet. She said that we would be fine with all of those cows we have out there. That actually comforted me a little. At least I'll be eating steak while the world crumbles around me.

I know what you mean...it's hard to vote for one party...you either like who's running for president or you like their running mate...there's not really a good choice. It will be interesting/scary to see what happens after this election.

Yea for me, I never get to be your first comment. I fell your pain, cousin. Somedays I'm crying, some happy, some ticked, but lately I'm all of those things on and off all through the day. I hope we can all have a few less trials in the future. I am very thankful for my blessings, expecialy my family, but some times I think the trials are overwelming. I find no comfort in the saying "It could always be worse" enough already! And then there is Prayer! I know Our Heavenly Father loves us, and he's mindful of all of our needs. His love gets me through all of the trials. ( sometimes not as quickly as I would like , but that my problem) As far as President goes, ugh I know what you mean, but I'm going to have to trust Mitt's choice on this one. I'll just hope that the Maverick doen't do too much damage for the next 4 years and that Mitt will be ready to jump in cuz Mc will be too ald to run again.hehe

I dont really care for either presidential nominee but I like both VP nominees. I have decided to vote republican no matter what! I like the values of the republican party & democrats always want to raise taxes (I'll have none of that!) Pray about it girly, you will find the answer! Dont Stress !

Yeah, hang on, it's goin a be a bumpy ride! I liked what goodygang said about trusting Mitt's choice. That's a good way to look at it. Remember who's really in charge anyway.

what an incredibly honest and insightful post amanda! i worry for y'all too, i really do! i thought hilary would do the job, but i guess her baggage (love him or hate hmi) weighed her down. from where i sit, palin and mccain are even scarier than george and whatisname. my husband has told me NOT to discuss politics or religon when i'm over there

oprah did a show on the freegan lifestyle. american is 5% of the world's population and use 30% of its resources. you are right to be worried!

i just booked ON STAGE seating for xanadu - WEEEEEEE!!!!!

not many more sleeps amanda!!!

Great post Amanda, but honestly who the president is really might not matter that much...I feel like we always get con into the idea that it does, but republican or democrat nothing really changes either time...expect tax rates. It is always the same old crap! SO much has to change in this country and it is all so complicated that I wonder if it can really happen ever...

What I do know is that I don't want socialize/universal anything…so pretty much I could never vote for Obama. I don't want big government. I don't want to take on more companies trillions of dollars in debt because of there stupid business decisions. I am sick of both parties and all the same old arguments that they use to try to get elected.

I want the candidate who will honestly put our country first, not his ego or what some lobbyist’s want.

Okay sorry so long...I should have written my own blog post.

It truly is voting for the lesser to two evils. I want so much (just like everyone else) to have a honest person who's not just blowing smoke. I don't know who I'll vote for, I want to vote because I have no right to complain if I don't but I've still not decided.
As to your personal concerns about finances, I suggest reading "The Richest Man in Babylon" if you'd like a copy, I will send you one (we have a few). It's an easy read and sound advice. The premise is to spend 10% of your income to pay off debt, 10% for savings and 80% to live off of (which would include tithing in the Mormon world).

Argh, I feel your pain. I don't think you're being a downer, I think you're trying to be smart and weigh your options. Yay for you for being honest about how you feel despite the very heated nature of the topic. Is it just me or are voters more argumentative this year than ever?? It does feel like such a pivotal election because of the current state of affairs. I still haven't made up my mind - good thing November isn't here yet! But, the way our government is set up (which, I love, by the way - go America! go Founding Fathers!) it doesn't seem completely fair to me to blame all our nations problems on one single solitary man or woman and his or her actions. Equally, it doesn't seem fair to put all our hope for a better tomorrow in one single solitary man or woman and his or her actions in four to eight years. One thing that I hope the current generation of Americans figure out is that most big problems don't have a quick or easy solution. Most big problems take careful thought and diligent effort towards a common goal. Which is why we try to build food storage, cash storage and stay out of debt. Aright - I'm getting off my soap box, now. My feet are getting sudsy.

Yes, that was sexist. The lady can
not help that she is a good lookin gal. Which everone becomes our next
president will not be making all the decisions for us. They can propose something to congress and then congress has to pass it. All this change they are both saying they are going to do will be up to congress. What my concern
will be is who they want to see on
the supreme justice. Both Obama and
McCain have so many advisors from
foriegn affairs and the ecomony on probably how to put their underwear on. I think Fox news has
really done a good job through it all.

All great opinions. I have gotten so many good perspectives on this. I have really learned a lot from all of your comments. It's good to see that so many others are torn like I am. I liked Jenn's point that if I am a big fan of Mitt, then I should trust the decision that he would make for President. Also, Scrappy don't be scared to talk politics, we are not all as bullheaded as one might think. And can't wait to see you in NY. Haley, I can't wait to read that book. I think you really hit the nail on the head with how I am feeling about things, right now. I think I might of lost a little focus in my post but my post was meant to be that ONE person cannot do it for all of us. We have to change our lifestyles and do it for ourselves, sort of like what Celeste said.

And you saw it here first. I am, apparently, sexist even though I am a woman. I hope you will all find it in your hearts to forgive me. Thanks for clearing that up for me Anonymous and one day I hope to find out who you are because I think we could be good friends. Seriously.

I'm worried I'll end up footing the bill for those who've lived beyond their means. I've spent the whole of my adult life budgeting and being careful and where has it got me?

Good news about the US government helping the financial markets though, maybe we'll get some stability back.

Otherwise, there's always wine and chocolate!

Good post. Came here to see who Sue was seeing before she comes to see me. ;)

I really don't want to vote either way. I don't ever remember being this undecided. Can't we have a do over or something??? That only seems right!

I imagine the majority of Americans live above their means, like around 95%. Yep, it may be time that we see what it feels like to struggle for the basics. I hope not, I don't like generic food. ;)

I'm right there with ya! I have no idea who to vote for either. There is no good choice. Let's just all pray that the lesser of the two evils wins. And since I don't want universal ANYTHING, I guess that means I want McCain to win? That doesn't sound good. :(
