Birthday Cake

The other day I made a comment on Working mum's blog that I don't usually get a birthday cake. I said that I guessed my husband's family wasn't that into doing cakes. I meant that in all my years of marriage to my husband he has never gotten me a cake for my birthday, so I assume that they didn't do that when he was growing up. He would say they were too busy working to eat any cake.

About eight years ago, I was pregnant with Jonathon and working at GAP. My birthday rolled around and I was about six months pregnant working in the mall. I called Josh to see if he wanted to come up and eat dinner with me at the mall to celebrate my birthday. He said he and his friend Travis were too busy to come eat with me. I asked what he was doing and he said he was just too busy.

I just knew I was having a surprise birthday party. He was busy getting all of my friends together for my fabulous party. That was okay. I could forgive him for not coming to eat with me since I was going to be having this great party. So, I head down to the Corndog 7 and get myself a corn dog, large Dr. Pepper and cheese fries and settle down to my birthday dinner. Can you picture me in the food court, eating a corn dog, bopping up and down getting excited about my BIG birthday bash? Good, you're there with me.

I get back to work and start trying to call Josh to try and find out more about my big plans. I reach him at home and now he and Travis are just hanging out watching TV. WHAT?! This is when it sinks in that there is no party. Now, I have to finish out my shift near tears the whole night. I thought we were going to get divorced that night. I called him on my way home and told him that if he knows what is good for him he will get right out and get me a cake for my birthday. I get home and there is this horrible round cake from Winn Dixie with the scariest clown I have ever seen and 2 big emergency candles stuck in it. (the cake was thanks to Travis, by the way, because my husband was STILL not going to go get me a cake) I cried the whole night and really wondered if my marriage was going to make it through this.

Over time, we come to accept things and I have accepted that my husband does not do cakes. Okay, fine.

But my friend Gigi does!

If that cake looks familiar, it's because she had one like it on her blog the other day. She baked one for my birthday. She saw my comment and decided I needed a cake. How sweet was that. It was her son that got the horrible clown cake years ago, and now she has made a special one just for me. Her little family has just been too good to me. I love ya, GIGI!

Madi really enjoyed her piece of cake.

See her party hat? They had a party at school and when I told her I had birthday cake she asked if she could put on her party hat.

She had spent the day before with Gigi and Shelby and I guess they looked for candles for my cake. She asked who made my birthday cake and I told her it was Gigi. Then she asked if Gigi ever found any candles. How cute is that?

Thank you, Gigi. That's the best Birthday Cake I've ever had. (Unfortunately, that's not saying much, I guess...)

Happy Birthday! And don't feel too horribly bad about the cake thing. For my birthday we ended up going to the "bakery discounted" (aka: on the verge of growing hair) rack at the grocery store and bought 1/4 of a cake that hadn't been sold.
PS: Someday when I'm a famous cake decorator, I'll make you the best dang birthday cake EVER!

my mum made me a birthday cake EVERY year up until i left home (at 21). i had a bit of drought inbetween years, except for my 40th (and maybe my 30th, but who can remember back THAT far?) but then along came tara (daughter of bakery shop owner) and she's been responsible for my birthday cakes for at LEAST the last 3 years (maybe more), and DAMN, they are good! lucky for me, she is a firm believer that it's not a birthday without a birthday cake.

NOW!!! do i need to be sending josh an email and having a word in his ear about cake in new york?????

Yay for Gigi! Isn't she great? Glad you got a scrummy cake for once.

I actually ended up with another one as daughter pursuaded husband to buy me a Kung Fu Panda cake. Think it was more for her than me!

That's a fabulous looking cake. Having made her Texan sheet cake about three times, I KNOW it must have tasted good.

And now you'll have the strength you need to look forward to NY. (I've not been posting much lately, but that's not to say I'm not very excited for you).

It's not a bad deal I suppose. You might not get cake, but you do get a trip to the big apple.

I thought you liked clowns. I had forgot about that. There again it wasn't my birthday cake.

Oh poor Travis, trying to do a good deed and he picked a clown cake. lol

Happy Birthday!!!

I rarely get a cake, that is fine by me, not much of a cake lover, BUT don't forget my present!!!

I wish I were there... I would make you the ugliest, but yummiest cake in the world. Birthday cakes are the greatest - Bdays are the only time we even eat cake... so we better darn well have it. However, Matt has made me a cake once in 10 years... I usually make my own!!!

Have the greatest time in NYC this weekend.
