What's in a name?

In our family a lot of tradition is in your name. I read in one of those silly name books once that you should name your child after someone who you have known or someone in your family so that the child will have a real person to live up to. I thought that was great so all of my kids have carried on family names in one way or another. I love telling people how I came up with all of their names, so since it's my blog and I get to say what I want, I will share that now. Jonathon Ebban got his name from his father Josh Ebban. I did not want to have a junior because I could just imagine the guys at the huntin' club calling him Junior or Lil' Josh. ( they do anyway, so why did I bother) Also, I believe that Ebban came from further back in the family, I'm just not sure where. Jackson Burke came from my father, Billy Burke Ryan Jr. and his father Billy Burke Ryan Sr. both pictured on the right. My grandpa has passed away now, but I am proud that Jackson has that little part of grandpa to carry with him. Madigan Lynn got her first name from a book, "The Pilot's Wife" by Anita Shreve. Lynn comes from her mom, (me, Amanda Lynn) and my mom Connie Lynn( who apparently runs from the camera at every family function since I cannot find a picture of her in all my folders. Mental note: make sure and get some pics of Grandma Connie). Then there is Emma Mae. My great-grandmother on my mom's side was Eula Mae and one of Josh's great-grandmothers was Nola Mae. We obviously could not go with either of the first names, nor a combination of the two (Eunola), so we picked the most popular name of 2007, Emma. I thought I might also do some shout-outs to cousins with family names. My sister Melissa has two kids. They are Cooper Lawton who gets his name from his dad Russell Lawton and Bailey Anne who gets her name from her mom and our grandma on my mom's side. Then there are Courtney's kids. I believe Ethan's middle name is Christopher which comes from his dad and Mckenzie's middle name is Elizabeth which comes from her mom. Echo you just have too many kids for me to even try, but I did notice that Noah James' middle name is your dad's name and Chris' dad's middle name. If I got any of the names spelled wrong, I apologize and feel free to comment at will. Was this whole post just too confusing for words, or what?

I will try to elaborate on Chris’ first two but since I wasn’t there and Chris remembers nothing from this time correctly so I will go with what I know……
Lynsey Morgan – Lynsey’s mother’s name is Debi Lynn, so that is why Lynsey’s name is spelled the way it is.
Kelsea Alexis – not sure except for the fact that Chris said he agreed with the middle name because he always liked the car Lexis.
Christopher Alexander – Patricia picked the name Christopher so he would be named after Chris. Not sure about the Alexander part except for the fact that it makes his name Christopher Alexander Kirkland which is a really long name.

With this information you can understand why I never wanted Chris to help with the other names; I mean he didn’t help with his first three so why start now. Chris’ side was I didn’t name the first three and I want to name my next one. So, this would be why we could never agree.

Anyway,
Bethany Corin – After several months of being pregnant Bethany was what we compromised on. I wanted to name my daughter after one of the people from the book Little Women. So, one day I said what about Beth and Chris said Bethany so there is where Bethany came from. As, for Corin, Chris never did agree on this name. We just didn’t have a middle name for Bethany. Chris wanted Jade and I didn’t want Jade. I really deep down wanted and still regret that I didn’t name her Bethany Elizabeth. With my name being Echo I think BETHany elizaBETH would have really worked. However, we felt that it would be a really long name. I mean what if she just wasn’t smart then it would take her all through grade school to learn how to spell it. I was in labor when Laura came to visit at the hospital and said ‘I really like Bethany Corin’. Pat said ‘I think that is a name a baby could grow into.’ I loved it from the moment she spoke it. So when the nursed asked I said Bethany Corin Kirkland. Chris wasn’t there and when he found out it was too late to change. hehehe

I thought at first if we had a son we would name him John after his father and Daniel after an Elton John song. (That’s were my sister’s name comes from) Anyway, we really liked John Daniel Kirkland. However, Amanda and Josh already had a Jonathon, and we didn’t want people to call him JD so we didn’t choose that name. After thinking awhile I knew I wanted my son’s middle name to be James. James is my grandfather, my father, and my brother’s first name, (James Howard Uphold Sr., Jr., and III) and my nephew’s middle name.(Braxton James Swaney) It was also my father-in-law’s middle name,(Farrell James) and my brother-in-laws first name(James Benjamin). So when you choose James as a middle name you have to pick something that goes with it. Believe it or not right away Chris and I agreed on Noah. Noah James Kirkland. I think it may have been, the first, the last, and only thing we have ever agreed on since we said ‘I Do’

Now I know why Amanda didn’t know why they have their names. I mean who could know? I agree there are too many children, and to many reasons….LOL

I am really enjoying this and I promise to try not to avoid the camera so much so that I can be part of this too.
